Christ The Saviour
SERMON TOPICS
First: Believe the resurrection of Christ: follow Christ and worship Christ (vs 16-17).
16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated.
17 And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.
Second: Obey Christ by making disciples (vs 18-20).
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to keep all that I commanded you;
How does the church make disciples?
a) The Church follows the authority of Christ (vs 18)
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
b) The Church obeys the commands of Christ (vs 19-20a)
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to keep all that I commanded you;
Matthew 28:19 is a Trinity concept or disclosing the Triune God. There are several verses of the Triune God:
2 Corinthians 13:14
14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
Ephesians 4:4–6
4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.
2 Corinthians 2:13–14
13 I had no rest for my spirit, not finding Titus my brother; but taking my leave of them, I went on to Macedonia. 14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place.
2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure. 1 Peter 1:2
“Contributing evidence makes it difficult to deny the presence of Trinitarian thought in the NT documents: (1) the frequency of the God-Christ-Spirit formulas; (2) their context and use: it is impossible, for instance, to imagine baptism into the name of God, Christ, and the elect angels; (3) the recognition by NT writers that the attributes of Yahweh may be comprehensively applied to Jesus and, so far as we have evidence, to the Spirit.” (cf. C.F.D. Moule, The Holy Spirit [London: Mowbrays, 1978], pp. 24–26; Carson, Farewell Discourse, esp. pp. 65–66). Carson, D. A. (1984).
Reason why we need to trust Christ’s commission by D.A. Carson:
First, our disciple-making church should focus on Christ’s command. Second, His command is eternal and is never outdated or dated. It is always relevant and transforming and refreshing. Third, His command is designed to be obeyed and followed continually. Fourth, His command implies a passing on the baton of disciple-making. The Gospel must spread to all the nations.
“Failure to disciple, baptize and teach the peoples of the world is already itself one of the failures of our own discipleship.” Carson, D. A. (1984).
c) Christ promised never to leave His church (vs 20b)
20b I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Go make disciples to ALL nations build His church, baptise people, teach and preach the gospel ALL things in season and out of season. and obey the words of Christ and never stop because the promises of Christ never ceases. He will always be with us and He is the great I am to us alway until the end of the age. Our authority comes from Christ who has all authority. Remember the closing or the ending of the book of Matthew didn’t end here but it started here and it is the start of our Gospel ministry.
Joshua 1:5 “No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you.
Psalm 46:7 The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah.
Isaiah 41:10 ‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
The resurrection of Christ is central to our Christian theology and doctrine. Our preaching and witnessing to people should always point to the cross and the resurrection. This is the very reason why we exist. The death and resurrection should be and must be the central theme of every Bible believing church. Just like Paul, Peter and John in their own ministries to the churches, they preached and defended strongly the testimony of the resurrection from false teachers. We should believe the Gospel, preach the Gospel and make a stand for the Gospel and be willing to suffer and die for the Gospel and defend the Gospel. So we can attain the resurrection from dead our living hope
(1 Corinthians 15:1-2; Philippians 3:10-11).
1) THE CRUCIFIED CHRIST THE SAVIOUR IS RISEN FROM THE DEAD (MARK 16-19)
1 And when the Sabbath passed, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him.
2 And very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
3 And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?”
4 And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was very large.
5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed.
1) THE CRUCIFIED CHRIST THE SAVIOUR IS RISEN FROM THE DEAD (MARK 16-19)
6 And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, the place where they laid Him.
7 “But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.’”
8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment were gripping them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
9 [Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons.
2) SEEK TO KNOW THE POWER OF THE CRUCIFIED CHRIST (MARK 16:10-13)
10 She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and crying.
11 And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it.
12 After that, He appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking along on their way to the countryside.
13 And they went away and reported it to the others, but they did not believe them either.
What is the implication of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and why we need to continually believe?
Jesus is alive, and He can appear any time to us
Jesus is alive, and He can hear and know our prayers. He also answers the prayers of His chosen people.
Jesus is alive, and so we who believe will be resurrected also from the dead.
Jesus is alive, so He can be our joy, peace, and hope.
There is an eternal Kingdom that we need to seek and look forward to.
The kingdom of the world will die and will not last forever.
Believing in Jesus Christ's resurrection is a sign that our faith in Jesus Christ is true and genuine.
Believing in the resurrection of Jesus Christ is to believe He came from God, and he was with God, and He is God. He is not a lunatic, a liar or a crazy man. He is God and Eternal Life.
To believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ is to live in good works, bearing fruit and giving God glory alone.
Believing in the resurrection of Jesus Christ means sharing Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His suffering.
Believing in the resurrection of Jesus Christ means you want to know Christ and follow Christ’s teachings and allow Him to be Lord of your life, your marriage and your family. You should worship Him alone!
Believing in Jesus Christ's resurrection means you are willing to proclaim, defend, guard, and protect the Gospel story.
Follow Him! He is alive! He is going to Galilee! See Him there! Worship Him there! Let us follow Jesus wherever we go! Jesus is alive waiting for us! Never to leave us nor forsake us! He is in heaven! Let us follow Him there! Let us see His face and worship Him there for eternity!
23 for you have been born again not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For, “All flesh is like grass, And all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, And the flower falls off, 25 But the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word which was proclaimed to you as good news.
1 Peter 1:23-25
Mark 15:42-47
40 And there were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and Joses, and Salome,
41 who, when He was in Galilee, were following Him and aserving Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.
42 And when evening had already come, because it was bPreparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,
43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent Council member, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.
44 And Pilate wondered if He had died by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He already died.
45 And ascertaining this from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.
46 And when Joseph had bought a linen cloth and took Him down, he wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.
47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He had been laid.
Mark 15:22-39
22 Then they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.
23 And they tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it.
24 And they crucified Him, and adivided up His garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide who should take what.
25 Now it was the athird hour, and they crucified Him.
26 And the inscription of the charge against Him read, “THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
27 And they crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left.
28 [And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.”]
29 And those passing by were blaspheming Him, shaking their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days,
30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!”
31 In the same way, mocking Him to one another, the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself.
32 “Let this Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.
33 And when the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
35 And when some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, “Look, He is calling for Elijah.”
36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.”
37 And Jesus, uttering a loud cry, breathed His last.
38 And the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.
39 And when the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was God’s Son!”
“Jesus’s death by crucifixion was a divinely ordained historical event by which He lovingly accomplished atonement, purchased Christians’ freedom from sin’s bondage, won their justification before the Father, and triumphed over Satan’s tyranny.” Systematic Theology
1)The unfair trial of Jesus (Mark 15:1-15)
Summary:
Pilate doesn’t care about Jesus dying on the cross, whether Jesus is guilty or not. No compassion. His concern was his life and position and influence. He loves the emperor more than the Christ who created him.
Pilate was a people-pleaser. He wanted to please Rome the emperor, the crowd, and the religious leaders.
Pilate doesn’t know Jesus as a Messiah. His conscience is clear because he doesn’t know if Jesus is really God and King. Even though he does, he doesn’t care at all.
The religious leaders and the crowd did not know who Jesus really was. They are all unbelievers. They have no faith and no Spirit of God.
The crowd were deceived by their own religion and by their priests. They (religious leaders) are blind guides, wolves, and false shepherds.
They are all deceived by satan to believe that Jesus is not the Messiah, their Saviour.
The crowd doesn’t know the Scripture or what is the motive of the Scripture in their lives.
The priests do not know the heart of the Scripture.
The heart of the Scripture is to know Christ the Saviour King and to be in the Kingdom of God.
The crowd was guilty of killing Jesus. They shouted crucify Him. We are all guilty of killing Jesus.
2) The mockery of Jesus or making fun of Jesus as a Messiah (Mark 15:16-21)
16 So the soldiers took Him away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they called together the whole Roman cohort.
17 And they dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him;
18 and they began to greet Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
19 And they kept beating His head with a reed, and spitting on Him; and kneeling, they were bowing down before Him.
20 And after they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him.
How should we reflect and meditate the suffering and mockery of Jesus?
True believers of Jesus Christ acknowledged Jesus Christ as King, Messiah and Saviour.
We should love, respect, and honour Christ, for He is the Creator, King, and Owner of everything.
We should put on a purple robe because He is a Holy and perfect King. He is a Sinless, perfect lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
We should crown Him King of all kings and Lord of all lords.
We should hail Him, King! Shout with a joyful heart. Having a rejoicing heart. Bowing down in reference to Him being the True King and Messiah.
We should worship and exalt Him for the rest of our Christian life.
We should regularly kneel down and bow down before Him because He is the True King and Shepherd of our souls.
We should use our hands to worship and raise our hands in worship to our great King
Our lips should give Him praise with thanksgiving and gratefulness in our hearts that He came to save you from separation to hell and given you eternal life.
